Tracking in Schools: Guidance
The following information is the criteria upon which your assignments will be graded. This document should be followed explicitly. Put your best work forward. If you plagiarize, you will receive a "0." If you have any questions, please ask before you turn in your paper. Best of luck!
This assignment is worth a total of 80 points. You will be evaluated on the following two components:
Component 1: Notes taken throughout your exploration of the WebQuest.
Students should record their notes and observations throughout the WebQuest on notebook paper. Notes can be recorded in bullet point format, but should be detailed, neatly written, and concise. (20 points total- broken down into two sections)
Component 2: Completion of the letter to the principal.
The persuasive letter will be evaluated on how well you meet each of the requirements below. In order to get full points for each requirement, the student must show a deep understanding of the requirement and provide additional information to support their answer. (60 points total - broken down into 6 requirements, 10 points each)
REQUIREMENTS (10 points each):
REMEMBER: Proofread your final draft before submission. This is a formal letter to the principal of the school; presentation and appearance form an integral part of the final product. Neatness counts!

- (10 points) Keep a record of the background knowledge that you acquire while researching Step 1 of The Process. Make sure to address all four questions and provide answers to each.
- (10 points) While researching the pros and cons for Step 2 of The Process, keep a record of the information you find for each side. Label the information you find as either pro, con, both, or unsure.
Component 2: Completion of the letter to the principal.
The persuasive letter will be evaluated on how well you meet each of the requirements below. In order to get full points for each requirement, the student must show a deep understanding of the requirement and provide additional information to support their answer. (60 points total - broken down into 6 requirements, 10 points each)
REQUIREMENTS (10 points each):
- (10 points) Understanding the audience. Uses appropriate vocabulary. Anticipates reader’s questions and/or concerns. (Keep in mind that you are addressing the principal of your school. The letter must be neat and professional.)
- (10 points) Clear and strong statement of the author’s position on the topic. Your position should be clear at the beginning of your letter.
- (10 points) Letters must include a minimum of 5 reasons that support the author’s position. The facts and examples used must be significant and relevant to the issue at hand.
- (10 points) Must address the opposition in a respectful manner. Make sure you anticipate the reader’s arguments and/or biases.
- (10 points) The letter flows and is easy to understand. Must be proof read for spelling and punctuation errors.
- (10 points) The letter follows the proper format of the prompt addressed in Step 4 of The Process.
